"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

happy mother’s day! mmmmmua.
[this pic shows my mom rockin’ it out in the mid 60s in bolivia. more here. ]
p.s. one of the sweetest little stories i’ve ever read – perfect for mother’s day.
I feel like a dope, but I never truly got the Bolivia connection until now. How did your parents meet?

liz ~ oof, no dopiness at all! it’s such an obvious and big fact in my life, i often forget that for others it’s not a foregone conclusion. ;)
i’m posting this in the comments as well, but wanted to make sure you saw it:
my mom was working the u.s. embassy in bolivia, waiting to get her green card to live in the u.s. for a year – she’d been an exchange student to pittsburgh in high school and was intent on going back (though not to pittsburgh – she had a sister living in d.c., i think..) anyhow, my dad was in the marine corps – he joined up about a year before they started drafting for vietnam – and eventually became an embassy guard. he had a choice of bolivia or austria, i believe the story goes – why those two countries, i have no idea. everyone assumed he’d pick austria – and of course, he didn’t. yay! off to bolivia he went and had a great time. one day he saw a pretty girl going down a treacherous bolivian hilly road on her motorbike wearing a fetching skirt and matching hat, that later he found out she’d handmade. he was intrigued, though they didn’t meet then. a little while later though, at the embassy, they sure did. she kept putting off her green card while they dated, he freaked his maryland farmer parents by calling and announcing he was getting married to a bolivian. and, when his tour was up, that’s exactly what they did. thank goodness.
thanks for asking – that was fun. ;)
