"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

dye day

posted 16 September 06 & filed under

alert: new background, so click ‘reload’ on your browser a few times if it doesn’t load automatically; it’s the flammarion woodcut – an image i’ve loved, and have framed in my bedroom, for a while now. this image just freaks me out ~ makes me go all dreamy-eyed and wistful.. something about being trapped and escape and possibilities and the beauty of the world all wrapped up. huh.

see this?

these are the supplies for my natural dye class i’m taking at the local fiber store – it’ll last for eight weeks, with classes every other saturday all day long. today is

Concepts of Mordanting: The application of the mordant is the most important step in the entire practice of dyeing. We will learn both the theory and process of mordanting silk, wool and cotton. You will mordant your materials and let them cure for use in the subsequent classes.

eek, how cool is that.

and my first ever, a teeny little contest: since i finshed icarus – just need to block it tomorrow or monday and plan on sleeping on the couch as a result, it’s so friggin’ big – here’s my next project, a little splurge of mine..

any guesses? a randomly chosen correct guess will get you a silly postcard from me and a free itunes song download (that i got as a result of filling out a ucla survey but i don’t do itunes). i told you it was teeny, though i might do a few other postcards too (snail mail, not e-mail ones.. that’s right, from los angeles, oh the glamor!)

update: yes it’s fair isle, no it’s not gloves, a bag, a vest, or a sweater. any more guesses?

off to do some dyeing ~ happy saturday ~ ~

p.s. i can’t help it – check out my cutie trouble giving her stern stare when i eat cheese and don’t immediately share:

Another Fair Isle bag to felt?

~ Francesca (Sep 16, 09:09 AM#)

aye that yarn is so pretty! and i love the new background.

i vote for fair isle mittens.

Ooh, so many colors. I’d say a Fair Isle vest or sweater, because it’s a splurge.

Books are on the way back! A returned address—gah. Sorry for the delay, Andrea!

i have no idea what the mystery project is, but i just wanted to say, “What’s up, Trouble?!” ;)

That looks like some blue skies alpaca to me. I see soem more fair isle in your future. I think another bag.

~ Marnie (Sep 17, 09:22 AM#)

hmmmmmmm…... you are planning on jointing the zimmermania knit along and doing the zimmerman fair isle yoke sweater.

On a more serous note though I am betting you are going to do another amazing bag.

I second Marnie on the Blue Sky Alpaca – I knows it when I sees it. I am also guessing a fair isle sweater, since I don’t see you as a repeater. I’m just not sure which one, because the cover sweater for IK and most other fair isles I know require more of a single color than is pictured there. BTW, I am so jealous of the natural dyeing. We need to do a dye session when Marnie’s in town in mid-October. Finally 0 love, love, love the background!

I can’t wait to hear more about your dying projects! Thats another thing I’ve always wanted to do. I’m finally taking a spinning class next weekend! yay!

Koigu KPPPM solids? Probably not.

I am so jealous of your dyeing class! Please tell us how it goes & show us what you make.

My cat gets like that on the rare occasion we make box mac&cheese.

I found your site today while looking for errata for Simple Knits for Little Cherubs. It was quite by accident really. Anyhow, I saw the post about your wonderful brother and was so very, very touched. He is a blessing for all who know him and read his story. You are so unbelievably lucky to have a brother like that. My experience with my brother was not nearly as happy. Reading your story reminded me that not all brothers are like mine. It was exactly what I needed to read and it touched me that he was not only kind to your cousin, but that he lives a life such that you continue to adore him today. Thank you for sharing something that made a complete stranger in so many ways. The internet is indeed a good thing now isn’t it? God Bless You All!! I will remember your family in my prayers.

a whooole day for mordanting. how lovely. hope it was fun, and i can’t wait to hear more about it.

squooshy yarn in pretty colors… 10 skeins… definitely colorwork, but i can’t think of anything that takes one of each color. blanket?

cute little Trouble. paws perfectly together. any second she will blink and hypnotize you into giving her all the cheese.
